Our History

LaVerne Caddy founded KMHS in 1993, having been in the Cornwall Ambulance Service for 34 years, latterly as Assistant Chief Ambulance Officer in charge of Control and Communications. He also set up the message handling and communications of Kernowdoc, one of the largest co-operatives of General Practitioners in the country at the time.

LaVerne’s two sons, Kevyn and Andrew soon followed into the business from their own careers, Kevyn as a manager of a cleaning company and Andrew retired as a Paramedic in the Cornwall Ambulance Service following a back injury.

Kevyn’s son, Anthony, has since joined the company and has shown a great understanding of the service is now playing a major role in the management of KMHS. Although LaVerne has retired, he still maintains an interest with the company, now under the directorship of Kevyn, Andrew and Anthony. Kevyn's other son Steven has also joined the company and has worked his way into the post of “supervisor on call”. Tim our “project manager”, completes the management team of KMHS.

Initially, the service provided out of hours support to General Practitioners. The name Kernow was chosen because it was envisaged that our clientèle would be from Cornwall. Our service soon crossed the Tamar, and into Devon and Somerset. Our reputation has spread and continues to do so. We now provide only short term cover for Gps, as our core business is covering veterinary surgeries across England, Scotland and Wales. We also supply a 24/7 service to small businesses nationally. To this date we have built our business with limited marketing, almost all of our clientèle have come to us by referral.

We have identified a need from our present clientèle for Lone Worker Monitoring. We are also now offering an OverFlow service.
